HANSOM CAB RIDES TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

Record of Correspondence Click Here

January 17th 2008 - please note that we are currently unable to drive the hansom cab into any of the Royal Parks in Central London due to a prohibition on 'commercial' vehicles. We are currently trying to obtain permission from Mr Andy Burnham MP - the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, to enter the Royal Parks. We are not optimistic however, because the Royal Parks Agency does not wish to permit the hansom cab to enter the parks as it is regarded as a commercial vehicle.

If the hansom cab were registered as a licensed taxi, it could display as many advertisements as it wished, because thousands of taxis are permitted to enter the Royal Parks every day.  However, we do not wish to operate the hansom cab along the lines of a taxi (London already has sufficient taxis) but we simply wish to enter the Royal Parks to give the horse a rest from traffic, and to avoid the necessity of circumnavigating the parks, which adds a lot of time to our journeys. The Royal Parks in Central London cover a considerable area, and it is impractical and unfair on the horse to expect it to constantly remain caught up in motor traffic.

If any visitor can manage to knock some sense into the heads of the officials at the Royal Parks Agency and the powers-that-be to persuade them to grant permission, we will give the lucky visitor a free ride around London in the Hansom Cab - with the first stop being Buckingham Palace!
